This workshop is perfect for senior level band students curious about composition and improvisation. No experience required.
On June 26th, The Kamloops Music Collective and the Kamloops Art Gallery will be collaborating to present a new workshop called The Art of Creative Music. This workshop will be for senior level band students who are comfortable on their instruments and curious about composition and improvisation.
The Art of Creative Music is an instrumental and visual art workshop designed to introduce band students to creative music making. Musicians will explore composition and improvisation in a fun, safe environment. At the end of the workshop, musicians will be given the opportunity to interpret graphic scores they have created. This is a great way to expand your skills in ensemble playing and develop a unique voice on your instrument.
Graphic Scores are the representation of music through the use of visual symbols outside the realm of traditional music notation. Blending art and music together, it allows for experimentation with new sounds. The visual cues of the score become a guide, or music map, for improvising musicians.
During the morning session, students will be guided through improvisation exercises and games at the Kamloops United Church. In the afternoon, the instructors and participants will walk down to the Kamloops Art Gallery where participants will get to create their scores at the Kamloops Art Gallery. The day will end with a group ensemble play through of a graphic score on display in the Gallery.
Students will explore and gather tools for improvisation and composition in a unique, fun multimedia environment.
